Why is Haiti so poor?

1.Haiti use to export Coffee. But then the coffee prices went so low they couldn't get anymore money out of it.
2. The goverment went bankrupt when they used 150 mil frans to help france a long time ago but now that turned into 21 bil frans.
3. Someone came and taught them how to make charcoal and they began selling charcoal. They didnt' realize how much wood it took and then Haiti had suddenly no more trees so they couldn't sell the charcoal anymore.
4. In Haiti there is barely any marine life left due to the soil erosion. That means they can't sell fish.
5. Also used to export sugar. But then, the sugar prices also turned really low so they decided not to sell anymore.
6. Only around 50% of the adults in Haiti have enough education to have a good living and of that 50% only 30% are employed.
7. They also have a lot of earthquakes because of forest degredation and they use a lot of money on fixing the devestation the earthquakes cause.
8. When the Europeans came and invaded Haiti they brought death, misery and destruction a long with them.

Haiti Update

About a week after the earthquake hit in Haiti, medical care is slowly flying in. They are finding many dead and even more injured. The boy above is getting medical care from an aid hut. Food and water is also a major problem. They estimate that they will need to fly in around 3 million meals  to feed the people who have suffered the most. The nation is already poor so therefore they simply couldn't afford something like this to happen. There is progress but it is happening very slowly, we need to get some more aid and food in.

Haiti Earthquake

On January 12, 2010 a 7.0 magnitude richter scale hit the poor nation of Haiti. The Haitian Goverment suspects that around 500,000  people are dead. Most were probably killed due to the poorly constructed building. When the U.S. Marines arrive at the spot before sending in massive aid, they see people on the streets trying to dig thier loved ones out. Some were sleeping on the street and searching desperatley for clean water. This truly is a pitiful scene.

January 12 Journal Writing

Today was the second day of school. I was kind of sick, but I had to go to school because I slept over at a friends house. Yesterday I slept over at my best friend Vanessa's house because my mom went to Bandung and we didn't have a car to pick me up. i started getting kind of queasy at her house and then started sneezing and coughing. Her mom was worried about me so she gave me some medicine. It started working but right before bed I started having a runny nose and coughing again. I woke 5 times that night because I had to sneeze. When it was 2:30, for some reason I thought it was 5:30 and crawled down from the bunk bed. When I saw Vanessa was still asleep I decided to check the clock. It read 2:30, so I crawled back up to the top bunk. When I got to school I was really tired from waking up 5 times the night before. The coughs got worse so I went to the nurse. She said I didn't have fever and just gave me 2 pills for my runny nose. I went up to Drama and then the class started. In the beginning of class, music was coming out of someone's bag. We didn't know who's it was so Mr.Westberg checked all the bags. It turned out to be my bag and it was really embarrassing. After class I went down to the cafeteria and realized I forgot my smaller bag with my wallet in his room. Vanessa and I ran to the drama room and luckily found my wallet where I put it. The coughing and sneezing became worse and worse so for all of lunch I was in the nurse's office laying down. Right now I'm in English and time for writing is up so bye.

Snow, Soccer, Friends and Basketball. . . the perfect combination.

I was supposed to go to a soccer school, when I got there the fields were filled with snow. I went there with a friend named Peter. Peter and I have been friends since we were 4.We were considering wheter to go home or not since no one was there. Right in the middle of deciding the director came out and told us we were playing futsal instead. We went around to gym 3 and there were about 20 kids our age. They were all kicking around with a ball so we decided to join in. I found some of my friends from the neighborhood, Anna is one of my best friends and she was there too. It was really fun and it was 6 hours everyday for 5 days. We were all playing in sweats because it was to cold to play in normal clothes. After 6 hours of hard work and conditioning, my friends and I still had energy. My friends names are Jamey, Anna, Mads and Peter. We all decided to play basketball since the gyms were still open and gym 2 had basketballs. Anna and I decided to pick our best friend Line up while the guys started playing basketball. We came back and all decided it was fair that it was 3 on 3. So we split it up guys vs. girls. The girls won. . . not. Actually the guys won by a landslide, but that was only because we were all laughing so hard for some reason. My friends and I always start laughing when it isn't a serious game. After the game we all went for a quick bite at Burger King that was around the corner. We all ate ourselves full and then went home. I followed Anna home because her house was closest and there was a snow stom coming up. We had fun at her house that I forgot what time it was. The snow storm was over so I decided to go home. When I opened up the door there was snow up to my waist! I had no choice but to stay at Anna's. I called my grandparents and found out that the plow hasn't come around to thier street so I would have to wait. I ended up staying for 2 days and that was pretty much the best 2 days of my christmas holiday!
